Gareth Southgate’s team overcame their World Cup demons by winning the penalty shootouts against Colombia. Now they take on Sweden for a place in the semifinals.
The Swedes are typically a defensive side, but they also have the quality to cause damage. Back to back wins against Mexico and Switzerland has seen Janne Andersson’s men strike four times without conceding. But unlike Sweden’s previous opponents, England have the attacking quality that can find goals. Harry Kane is an obvious threat in front of goal, and so is the pace of Raheem Sterling and Jesse Lingard.
England’s defence, however, has been far too generous in this tournament, giving away a goal in each of their previous games. That said, Sweden will fancy their chances of scoring in this one at some point. Strikers Emil Forsberg and Marcus Berg are especially dangerous from crosses and set-pieces, something that has seen England concede three goals so far.
Backing both teams to find the net seems an ideal bet.
