Premier League wk1 | ST. MARY’S STADIUM
Southampton Ready for a Great Start against Burnley
The Saints survived an epic relegation scare last season and will be eager to hit the ground running this term when they host Burnley. Sean Dyche side exceeded expectations by earning a Europa League qualifying spot, but that would be a significant distraction in itself.
Southampton has struggled for consistency in recent seasons, but their exploits in domestic cups suggest the potential to improve is there. The Saints reached the FA Cup semi-finals last season and took part in the League Cup final a year before. Mark Hughes can turn things around, and he has already shown the intent with his dealings in the transfer market. Goals were hard to come by, but playmakers Mohamed Elyounoussi and Stuart Armstrong have been brought in to provide the much-needed creativity upfront.
Burnley got the most out of this fixture last term and may still be dangerous, with club top scorer last season, Chris Wood and his partner Ashley Barnes posing a physical threat up front. This match comes just three days after Burnley tussle Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey. That means Southampton will arguably be the fresher side and in a great position to notch up a win.
I see a close fought battle with plenty of goals.
- The last six encounters between Southampton and Burnley in the Premier League have never ended without a goal.
